Parish of OUR LADY & ST VINCENT, Potters Bar
Celebrating in the light of Christ.
10 June 2018, 10th Sunday in Ordinary time (Year B)
Who told you that you were naked?
Some children are bullied because they don’t have designer trainers; teenagers don’t eat properly, or obsessively exercise, because they think that their bodies are the wrong shape; some people withdraw from family and friends because they feel that their sexuality and feelings are ‘wrong’; people get into dreadful debt on multiple credit cards because they want to fit in with designer clothes and cars; parents are pressured to hire tutors for their children because everybody else is; people suffer in silence with depression, not going for help, because they don’t want to be seen as weak or odd. There are so many ways in which people suffer because of the perceived expectations of others and a sometimes warped idea of what is ‘normal.’
God gave our ancestors everything – paradise – so that they would grow and flourish in his love. God gives us all his unconditional love so that we might grow and bear fruit. God says ‘I love you as you are.’ The Bible says that we are made in the image and likeness of God.
Satan sowed doubt into the minds of Adam and Eve. ‘God is holding back that one extra thing – if he really loved you, he would let you eat all the fruit.’ So many influences in our world are telling us the same thing.
In the Gospel Jesus is very clear. There are no special relationships between God and particular people – it doesn’t matter whether I am the mother of Jesus or a tax collector or another ‘public sinner.’ As long as I hear the word of God and do my best to be guided by it – I will flourish and bear fruit.
We pray for our brothers and sisters who are not feeling ‘good enough.’ We pray for those caught in cycles of addiction or low self-worth. We examine our own acceptance of the dignity of those who are ‘different’. By our love and acceptance we can convince others of God’s unconditional love for them and help them flourish as the beautiful people they are.

SR TERESA ROSENGRAVE
Sr Teresa’s Funeral Mass will be at 10am on Thursday 14th June. Her body will be taken to Ireland for burial. Sr Teresa touched the lives of so many people and so we are expecting a large congregation. With the assistance of Mount House School, we will be providing hospitality. We need volunteers to help in various ways – please see the sign-up sheet in the narthex and sign up if you can help.
POST CONFIRMATION BBQ – THURSDAY 14TH JUNE
Newly confirmed young people – please make sure you have replied to Francesca Khaliq’s email about attendance and dietary requirements for the BBQ this Thursday at 7pm -9pm.
You should have received an email about availability for the next rota. Please reply as soon as possible. If you have not received the email please contact Pat.
CHURCHES TOGETHER HOLIDAY CLUB 23 – 27 JULY
This is an exciting ecumenical venture for primary-aged children with a pirate theme. Lots of volunteers needed (including teenagers) Fr Shaun has details. We need volunteers, both adults and secondary school pupils, and training will be given. As well as helping with activities we need people to provide lunch for volunteers, admin support and prayer partners. Come and hear more after Mass. Information meeting on Monday 11th June at 8pm in Christ Church, Little Heath
BAPTISM PREPARATION MEETINGS
The next baptism preparation meetings will take place on Monday 25 June and Monday 2 July from 7.30pm until 9pm. If you would like to have your child baptised please give your details to Fr Shaun, Deacon Don and contact the office to register for the course. Both parents are encouraged to attend the meetings.
Mike Sibley has been appointed Parish Safeguarding Representative by the Diocesan Safeguarding Co ordinator. He will be responsible for ensuring that the church is a safe environment for children and vulnerable adults, for safer recruitment of volunteers and as the link between the parish and the diocese in safeguarding matters. A huge thank you to Chris Lundrigan who has stepped down from this role after great service. This voluntary position is very important in the life of the parish.
Following an experimental period with reduced incense, there are a couple of people who have still found difficulties. Incense will not be used at the Saturday 6pm Mass. Use on Sundays depends on the availability of trained servers.
The Prayer group meets every Tuesday at 10.45am in the Reconciliation Room. Jesus said where 2 or 3 are gathered in His name, there He is and we know that praying together rather than alone is more efficacious. We look forward to welcoming new members to the Prayer Group.
We are in need of help with flowers. You don’t need to be a florist just have a love for flowers. Four volunteers to form a team would make your commitment once a month. Please leave your details with the Parish Office if you can help.
CONFIRMATION, FIRST HOLY COMMUNION & RECONCILIATION 2019
Please make sure that all registration forms are submitted to the Parish Office by Monday 11th June. Francesca Khaliq will then email further information with regard to the progranmes.
POPE PAUL RC SCHOOL STRAWBERRY FAYRE
Pope Paul Catholic School are holding their annual Strawberry Fayre on 1st July 2018. Please support us by purchasing raffle tickets or coming along on the day. Raffle tickets and wristbands for inflatables, go carts and under 5’s play area will be on sale after all Masses next weekend.
You may remember that the Lent/Easter Cross was due to come down at Pentecost but a large number of people have asked to have it left up as it is much larger than the original and a better focus for prayer. It would be nice to have a Crucifix (ie. with Jesus on it) of this size in that position. If you have any thoughts please speak to Fr Shaun (or email/write)
