Parish of OUR LADY & ST VINCENT, Potters Bar
Celebrating in the light of Christ.
24 June 2018, THE NATIVITY OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST
Faith of our Fathers
Last Wednesday we celebrated the feast of St Alban, our first martyr, who, when we were under Roman occupation, swapped clothes with a priest and gave his life for the faith. On Friday we celebrated Ss John Fisher and Thomas More, martyrs of the Reformation. On Wednesday we celebrate the feast of St John Southworth, one of the principal patrons of our diocese. He was a secular priest who worked clandestinely in the Westminster area, ministering to the poor and the sick. He was hung, drawn and quartered at Tyburn in 1654.
The mortal remains of St John Southworth lie in Westminster Cathedral and, in the coming week, they will be moved to the centre of the Cathedral. On Saturday six men will be ordained priests for our diocese (please remember them in your prayers) and, during the Litany of the Saints, they will lie prostrate around the body of St John Southworth, whilst the congregation prays for them. St John Southworth is a great inspiration and intercessor for us.
In his vocation, his calling from God, St John Southworth served the Church with faithfulness and courage. This is in the pattern of St John the Baptist and of Jesus Christ himself, who gave everything on Calvary for us.
Today, in the first reading, we hear the words of Isaiah ‘The Lord called me before I was born, from my mother’s womb he pronounced my name.’ Today these are applied to St John the Baptist. Yet they are words of truth for everyone who hears them, for each of us has a God-given purpose in our lives. Pray, then, for each other, that you may all have that sense of purpose and dedication in your life. Then you will pray with joy, as I do, the words of today’s psalm ‘I thank you Lord for the wonder of my being.’
This last paragraph is an extract from the Pastoral Letter from Cardinal Vincent which is read in all churches of the diocese this weekend. You can read the letter on the diocesan website www.rcdow.org.uk
