PARISH OF OUR LADY & ST VINCENT, POTTERS BAR
Celebrating in the light of Christ.
11 February 2018, 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time
PRAYER, FASTING AND ALMSGIVING
On Wednesday we begin the great season of Lent when we make a concentrated attempt to grow in our faith particularly through the three traditional ‘pillars’ of Lent which are expanded upon in the Gospel for Ash Wednesday (Mt: 1-6, 16-21). Today we have a pastoral letter from our Archbishop, Cardinal Vincent, to encourage us in this season.
If you were away last week please take one of the purple Lent leaflets which lists opportunities for PRAYER and reflection during Lent.
FASTING is not just about giving up non-essential food and drink; some people cut down on time spent watching TV or using social media. Instead of listening to music or watching films on the journey to work, some people use the reflections on such websites as pray-as-you-go.org
ALMSGIVING is not just about money; we all have precious time and talents which we can share with others.
Traditionally in the Church we have collected Lenten Alms. In his letter this weekend Cardinal Vincent talks about his Lenten Appeal. Anybody can apply for a grant from this fund to carry out innovative work in the three areas of social outreach, young people and marriage & family life. Next week a leaflet will be available outlining some of the projects which have been funded in the past. There will also be envelopes for you to save your Lent Alms. These will be collected on Palm Sunday weekend. The Cardinal does not want this to detract from CAFODs Lent Fast Day.
I hope that everybody will be able to begin Lent together by getting to church on Ash Wednesday. If you are away, most churches have websites where you can find the times of Mass. As we begin this season let us pray for one another and I particular those preparing to become Catholics at Easter. Fr Shaun

Do you hold any keys to church property? We have to keep a central record of all key- holders. This is an essential requirement of our insurance and is also important if we have to change/swap a lock. If you hold any keys to the church, hall etc. please let the office know which keys you have TODAY so that records can be updated.
CARDINAL’S MASS OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY
Westminster Cathedral, Saturday 19th May 2018 at 3pm. The Cardinal will be inviting to this Mass all couples in the Diocese who are celebrating their 5th 10th, 25th, 30th, 40th, 50th and 60th (and every year over 60) wedding anniversary in 2018. If you are celebrating an anniversary, please give the office the following details: husband and wife’s names, wedding date, full postal address and email or telephone number.
Couples wishing to marry in the Catholic Church, whether here or elsewhere, have to give at least 6 months’ notice to their local parish so that paperwork and preparation can be arranged. We running a Marriage Preparation Course later in the year and so, if you are intending to marry in the next 12 months you should speak to Fr Shaun as soon as possible.
Confirmation & First Holy Communion cards and gifts are available from the Repository in the Parish Hall after all weekend Masses.
For your contribution to the ‘audit’ at Mass last week. The collated responses are enclosed on a separate sheet. Please reflect on the list and pray about it over the next few weeks. Some items are already under consideration by one of the committees (Liturgy, Evangelisation, Social, Property & Finance). In Lent we can continue to reflect on the growth of our own faith and our participation in the wider community. All the good things we appreciated last week have evolved over time and so we are not rushing to do anything – it is important to reflect and pray. Fr Shaun
Ministers of the Eucharist take Holy Communion each week to many parishioners who cannot come to Mass and the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) visit and assist many people in need. Are you aware of anybody who can no longer get to Mass? Sometimes people assume that ‘somebody’ will have told the priest or the office about such a person. If you know of anybody in this situation please ask them if they would like a visit and let the Parish Office know their details.
FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT MONDAY 26TH FEB – SUNDAY 11TH MARCH
‘For hundreds of years, we were taught to serve, to be workers. Now with Fairtrade, we are entrepreneurs’ Marcial Quintero, member of Coobana, a Fairtrade banana co-operative in Pamela. It’s a scandalous reality that millions of farmers and workers are still being ripped off despite working hard to provide the products we love. Unfairness in global trade is rooted in centuries of exploitation. Yet across the globe, Marcial and hard-working producers like him are unravelling this legacy. They’re fighting for a fair deal, supported by Fairtrade, earning their way out of poverty and transforming their communities. See www.fairtrade.org.uk to learn more.
