PARISH OF OUR LADY & ST VINCENT, POTTERS BAR
Celebrating in the light of Christ.
14 January 2018, 2nd Sunday of the Year
The First Disciples
This year the ordinary Sunday gospel readings are taken from Mark, and this provides us with a full picture of that gospel. But Mark is the shortest of the gospels, and is not quite long enough, so just occasionally a reading from John slips in to enrich our understanding of the meaning of Jesus’ words and actions. Today’s story is about the call of the first disciples and takes place in the Jordan valley, where John was baptising. The first two to be called are disciples of John, so they had already joined his group who were waiting for the Messiah. They were ready when John pointed him out. It is striking that Jesus first calls them to be with him, and that they remain with him for a time.
In our call to follow Christ, first comes prayer and getting to know him, before we can actively work for Christ and bring others to share his joy. Only after this repose with the Lord do the disciples sprint off in their enthusiasm and bring others to join in the benefits they have received from that tranquillity and refreshment which comes from keeping company with Jesus.
What is God calling you to do?

CALLING PAST FIRST HOLY COMMUNION CATECHISTS

Candidates are reminded to meet at the Furzefield car park (not the church car park) at 8.30am on Sunday 28th January for the Retreat at SPEC, Pinner. We will be leaving promptly at 8:45am. The approximate time of return to Our Lady & St Vincent car park will be 5.30pm. Francesca Khaliq will send a text to parents once the return journey has started with a more accurate time of arrival. Candidates will need to bring their bible and a packed lunch (no nuts or glass bottles please) and wear warm appropriate clothing. Candidates are asked not to bring any mobile phones or any other electronic devices, Francesca will be the emergency contact for the day (07732 651388). For those who have not yet returned the OV7A form, please complete and return to Francesca as soon as possible.
Sessions will recommence on Wednesday 31st January in the parish hall, 7:15pm registration.
BAPTISM PREPARATION MEETINGS
The next baptism preparation meetings will take place on Mondays 22 and 29 January from 7.30pm until 9.pm. If you would like to have your child baptised please give your register with the Parish Office.
From now on there will be a volunteer in the office on the first working Tuesday of the month and Masses may be booked in person or by phone for the following month. So, in January you may book a Mass for February and so on. We do send Masses to retired priests and missionary priests every two months and so, if you do not mind, your Mass can be sent away. We will give a reminder of the date in the newsletter. If you book the Mass by phone you may give the offering into the office later. We will try this system for a few months. There is a more complete explanation on the noticeboard.
NEW TO THE PARISH?
Please take a Welcome Pack from the stand, learn more about the parish and complete the registration form.
There will be a short meeting for all Ministers of the Word (Readers) after Masses on 20/21 January in the hall. This will be an opportunity to ask any questions.
The parish relies on the time, talent and generosity of many parishioners. As commitments change and people move others are needed to help. There will be an information weekend and recruitment drive for volunteers later in the month. One area where we need help at the moment is a team of volunteers who would come and count various small amounts of loose cash on a Friday before or after Mass. Commitment is for 1 hour every fortnight – less if more come forward. All is mechanised and full training given. Please speak to Fr Shaun or the office if you can help.
