PARISH OF OUR LADY & ST VINCENT, POTTERS BAR
Celebrating in the light of Christ.
3 December 2017, First Sunday of Advent/Day of Prayer for Migrants
(Readings are taken from Year B of the year cycle)
The Watcher at the Door
This brief parable of the master returning unexpectedly is typical of Jesus’ vivid way of speaking. The message is typical, too, because Jesus was constantly stressing that there is no time to lose. When he came in his earthly ministry he again and again challenged his hearers to make up their minds NOW, to change their ways NOW. He challenges us to do the same. We can hear the rattle of the returning Master’s key in the lock. There is no time to hide the contraband, to pull our uniforms straight before greeting the Master at his entry. Even if we do not think that the world’s end is imminent, even if death is not threatening, every moment counts, every decision is for or against Jesus. Saints are rumoured to have said that, if they received the news that they were to die that night, they would carry on doing what they were doing anyway. Saints can do this, because they are ready for the coming of the Lord. But what about us? If we need to put things a bit more in order to prepare for the Lord’s coming, is there any valid reason to delay? The four weeks of Advent are a good time to clean things up for the Lord’s coming.
What would you like to change about your life in preparation for the coming of the Lord?

At 6pm Mass this weekend we welcome our First Holy Communicants to their Mass of Enrolment.
At 11am Mass we will have the Rite of Acceptance for RCIA, we welcome Alena Paul and Louise Tisdall who are two of our RCIA candidates. Please continue to prayer for all the First Holy Communion children and our RCIA group, as they journey towards the sacraments at Easter and in May.
ADVENT – A TIME OF WAITING
Please take the special leaflet with details of Advent and Christmas including Saturday morning Mass, Exposition and Confessions. There are still some ‘Walk with Me’ reflection booklets available in the Narthex, excellent value at £1 each. This is a great opportunity to take a little time out and prepare spiritually for Christmas.
During Advent the church will be open more often each day for private prayer, either in the main church or in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
Please note the earlier time of Mass on Wednesday. This is to enable Fr Shaun to be at school where Bishop John Wilson is visiting to close the anniversary celebrations. Also, due to an Allen Hall Governors’ Meeting on Thursday Fr Shaun has to take Friday as his day off – so the only Mass that day is the Convent Mass.
THE CHORISTERS OF WESTMINSTER CATHEDRAL will be performing Benjamin Britten’s ‘A Ceremony of Carols’ in the church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint George, 45 London Road, Enfield, EN2 6DS on Wednesday 6th December at 7pm. Free entry, retiring collection. All are welcome.
OVER 50s’ CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY
The Over 50s’ Christmas Party takes place on Friday 8 December from 2pm to 4pm in the Parish Hall. Pope Paul School Choir will be singing and we will be running a raffle. Any donations of raffle prizes will be gratefully received. Next meeting on Friday 12 January 2018.
The pupils of Pope Paul School will be leading a beautiful Advent Service on Friday at 7pm in the church. All welcome. Please come and support them and their parents.
KING CHARLES the MARTYR
On Saturday 9th at 3pm Rev Atalie Gaines will be instituted as the new vicar in our nearest Anglican Church (further along Mutton Lane). Please pray for her and for the parish.
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
Two of the four enquirers will be moving into the second stage of their journey this weekend at the 11am. Mass as we welcome them as Catechumens and Candidates. These enquirers have consciously and freely sought the living God and entered the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. Please pray for our new catechumens and candidates as they continue their conversion journey. We, as a parish, will journey with them as they discover what it means to follow Christ as a Roman Catholic.
ROSARY ON TUESDAYS
We will continue to pray the rosary together before the 10.00 a.m. Mass on Tuesdays starting at 9.40 am.
Many thanks to everybody who has signed up to be a prayer sponsor for one of the Confirmation Candidates, please continue to pray for them until their Sacrament of Confirmation in April next year.
CALLING PAST FIRST HOLY COMMUNION CATECHISTS
