Celebrating in the light of Christ

8 April 2018, Second Sunday of Easter

HE IS RISEN!  ALLELUIA!

Following forty days of penance and fasting we are now into fifty days of feasting!  The Easter season runs from Easter Sunday until Pentecost. The Paschal Candle burns at every Mass, the water in the font flows and the Lenten Cross is draped with a white cloth – all reminders of the season.

Congratulations to Alena and Louise who were confirmed at the Easter Vigil and also to  Nikita, Luca, India, Dejon, D’hani, Ivie and Maisie who were baptised on Easter Sunday morning.

Thank you to all those who gave so generously of their time and talents to make Holy Week and Easter so memorable.  One striking feature was how many parents brought their children to many of the services.  In this week there is so much to see and this visual dimension of our worship leaves a deep impression on children.  Many of our First Communion and Confirmation candidates were present during the week.  Please continue to pray for them as they prepare to receive these important sacraments in the weeks ahead.

Thank you to all those who have sent cards and gifts to me and to Don and Fran.  Your affirmation helps us to serve you.  In two weeks time we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday.  Let us pray that some of our generous, talented young people might consider a vocation to the priesthood, diaconate or religious life.

There are 2.2 billion Christians in the world today.  This is the result of a few women and men, two thousand years ago, discovering an empty tomb and telling the world about Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection.  The primary way in which they did this is described in the Acts of the Apostles today;  they generously shared all they had – people knew they were Christians by their love.

This was not without difficulties – one of which is described in the reading from Acts today; in the sharing of food some non-Jewish Christians were experiencing discrimination.  Stephen was commissioned to remedy that.  This was a completely new way of living, based on the individual dignity of every human being.  Do people see Christianity in my actions?  Do my values reflect my faith?  Selflessness is often difficult in a selfish world but the risen Lord Jesus walks with us to keep us strong.

OFFICE HOURS

The office is open from 9.30am – 12.30pm each weekday except Wednesday, when it is closed.  There is much information on the website and, if your matter is not urgent, email is a useful way of communicating.

LIVE STREAMING

People who cannot get to Mass due to illness or caring committments can now watch Mass over the internet as it happens. Just go to the parish website www.olasv.org.uk and click on the ‘live streaming’ link.  This service has become a lifeline to so many elderly and ill people in other parishes, linking them with their parish Mass. It can also enable family and friends who are unable to travel for a funeral or baptism to watch the liturgy live.

If you are away on a Sunday, or if you want to help the environment by being paperless, remember that you can view the weekly newsletter on the website.

Confirmation & First Holy Communion cards and gifts are available from the Repository in the Parish Hall after all weekend Masses.  The Repository will also be open at all First Holy Communion Mass rehearsals and The Rite of Confirmation rehearsal.
