17th October 2021, 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
As we learnt from the Cardinal’s letter last weekend (see www.rcdow.org.uk/synod) we are starting on a listening process as a church. At the Saturday Vigil Mass in the Cathedral this weekend Cardinal Nichols, our Archbishop, will start the process in our diocese and we will begin to pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit this weekend. Angela Baffa, our parish representative, is attending the Mass on behalf of the parish and she will be our main link with the process.
The Holy Father introduced this world-wide process last Sunday in St Peter’s. He summarised the process in three words; ENCOUNTER, LISTEN and DISCERN. Cardinal Vincent has posed the questions; What have we learnt from our experience of the Pandemic? What does it mean for us as a church? What are the implications as we move forward?
Over the next couple of weeks there will be training to help us decide how to follow this process in our parish. In November we will have the listening phase – lots of conversations and opportunities to listen to each other. The lead time is short but we will, as a team, try and create opportunities, both in-person and on-line, for as many parishioners as possible to meet, reflect and discern.
In the week ahead we are asked to pray as information is disseminated through the diocese. The synod prayer, inside the newsletter, is an ancient prayer attributed to St Isodore (560-636) which has been used for councils and synods of hundreds of years. It is beautiful and sets the scene for what we are doing. Please pray it every day, asking for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
We hope to know more by the weekend and then we will meet to decide how to best put this into action in the parish.

PRAYER for the SYNOD 2022-23
We stand before You, Holy Spirit,
as we gather together in Your name.
With You alone to guide us,
make Yourself at home in our hearts;
Teach us the way we must go
and how we are to pursue it.
We are weak and sinful;
do not let us promote disorder.
Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path
nor partiality influence our actions.
Let us find in You our unity
so that we may journey together
to eternal life
and not stray from the way of truth
and what is right.
All this we ask of You,
who are at work in every place and time,
in the communion of the Father and the Son, forever and ever. Amen.
