Parish of OUR LADY & ST VINCENT, Potters Bar
Celebrating in the light of Christ.
6 May 2018, Sixth Sunday of Easter, Year B
Thy Kingdom Come
From the Feast of the Ascension (10 May) there is traditionally a Novena (nine days of prayer) leading up to Pentecost. All Christian Church leaders have asked us to pray this novena with each other. We are joining with other churches in Potters Bar to make this powerful prayer in our town. You can find out more at www.thykingdomcome.global
A Novena Prayer Booklet is available in the narthex (50p) with art and prayer for each of the nine days – take one and make a pledge to use it in solidarity with Christians throughout the world.
Open Churches on Saturday 12 May every church in Potters Bar will be open for the day and, on each hour, there will be prayer in one of the churches. Our prayer slot is at 10am, Morning Prayer. See poster for details.
From 7th May to Pentecost there will be a prayer focus in our church called ‘The Stations’ – a powerful set of 14 black and white images with reflections on the plight of refugees and asylum seekers linked to the suffering that Jesus experienced and inviting our response.
Our church will be open from 8am until 6pm every day for people to pray the stations. Tell your friends.
On Pentecost Day, Sunday 20 May, at 6.30pm all Christians will gather for the Life and Mission Choir’s new musical Sing Good News in St John’s Methodist Church, Baker Street (entrance free with retiring collection for the Bible Society)

MAY, MONTH of OUR LADY
In May and October we have a special emphasis on Our Lady. A statue of Our Lady from the new crib set we have been given has been placed in the Reconciliation Room. Apart from Tuesday, all are invited to pray the Rosary in that space, leaving the Blessed Sacrament Chapel for silent prayer.
On Tuesday there was a great response to the exciting new DVD series on Our Lady called ‘Let it be; how Mary helps us to be filled with God’ This continues after Mass on Tuesday and all very welcome, even if you could not make last week. Each session stands alone.

SPECIAL MASS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN BEREAVED – FRIDAY 18 MAY AT 7.30PM
When someone we love dies, regardless of how young or how old they may have been – we can experience many emotions including a longing for one more day, one more touch.
Death is no respecter of age or circumstance and the heartbreak of death is universal. You may have lost a loved one over the last few weeks, some months ago or many years ago, whenever the loss occurred we invite you to join us for a special Mass with our parish community when our prayers will be offered for you and with you.
This Mass will be on Friday 18 May at 7.30pm and all parishioners are encouraged to come and support those who are bereaved. Refreshments are available after the service.
COME AND SEE
There will be a presentation on the Permanent Diaconate in our hall from 10am until 12noon on Saturday May 12. If you would like to know more about the role of the deacon in the church, please come along.
CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERT
Meinir Thomas & Pam Moutoussi would like to thank everybody who made the music recital last Friday such a huge success. £330 was also raised for Mary’s Meals. The next concert is planned for 29th June! It was a great evening.

SAFE-GUARDING FOR FIRST HOLY COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION CATECHISTS 2019
If your child will be preparing for Confirmation or First Holy Communion (2019) and you are thinking of becoming a catechist to help at the sessions, you will need to complete a DBS safeguarding check before September. Please give the parish office your contact details and our Safeguarding Rep, Mike Sibley, will be in touch with you, many thanks.
Would you have time to help arrange flowers in the church each week? We would like to recruit enough people so that the commitment would only be once a month. Please speak to Fr Shaun or leave your details with the Parish Office if you are interested.
CARE of CHURCH GROUNDS
Thank you to those who have volunteered to help with grass cutting and the care of vegetation in the church grounds. You are being contacted by somebody from the Property Committee so that a rota can be drawn up. It is not too late to join the group – let the office know your details if you can help.

Donations to CAFOD until 12 May will be doubled by the UK Government. We have planned a £5 million programme to combat malnutrition – and with it we hope to be able to reach 245,000 people. But we need the full amount of match funding to make it happen. You can help us reach the full amount needed for this crucial programme. We still havesome way to go yet! To donate please go to cafod.org.uk/lent
