Celebrating in the light of Christ.
2 September 2018, 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time (YrB)
If one member suffers, all suffer together with it
With these words (1 Cor 12:26) Pope Francis has written a letter ‘to the people of God’ concerning the scandal of abuse in the Church. The revelations in the past few weeks have been shocking and distressing. Cardinal Vincent wrote a letter to priests two days after the Pope’s letter asking us to read the letter, reflect on it and to urge you, to read it as well.
Abuse, sexual, physical and psychological, is horrific wherever it occurs but, abuse in the Church, which is supposed to reflect the light of Christ to the world, is doubly horrific. We are all members of the Body of Christ, the Church, and so, even though we may not have been involved in abuse or the cover-up of abuse, we share that shame and distress.
I met a 95 year old priest in Boston in 2002 when the abuse scandal there became public. Reflecting on his shock (he knew one of the priests involved and had no idea of this side to his life) he said ‘we must respond to this with humility if the light of Christ is to shine out again.’ Pope Francis has taken a lead in this response. We have safeguarding procedures in this country but we cannot be complacent. In the meantime let us pray for the victims and survivors of abuse, especially those who feel that nobody will believe them. We pray that they will have the courage to tell their story. We pray for all those who support survivors. We pray for the Holy Father and his brother bishops as they continue to respond. We pray for the Church, that we may be a place of safety and healing.
Copies of the letter of Pope Francis, the speeches of the Taoiseach and the Pope in Dublin and an article by Fr James Hanvey SJ are available for you to take away and read.
The letter of Pope Francis is available on www.rcdow.org.uk and that of Fr Hanvey is available at www.thinkingfaith.org. The speeches from Dublin can be read in full under 25 August at www.associationofcatholicpriests.ie

KERALA FLOODS: AN SVP APPEAL
As you’ve probably seen in the media, terrible floods have been taking place in Kerala in southern India. Hundreds of people have been killed and many more are missing; countless homes have been washed away, and the monsoon season is set to continue until early September. The St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP), is very active there and they are doing great work helping the victims of the flood in local communities. However, they desperately need funds. Our SVP group will be collecting after Mass next weekend for those who wish to contribute. Please be generous in your response.
We welcome Alex Balzanella, a student at the English College in Rome. He is training to be a priest for our diocese and he will be living and working in the parish for the month of September. Later this week Michael Oxenford, a student at Allen Hall Seminary, also training for our diocese, will be moving in. Michael will be living and working in the parish for the whole academic year. Deacon Don is on holiday and retreat for the month of September. Francesca Khaliq is preparing for surgery and her back is very painful. She will be working from home as she is able and in the parish occasionally. Please direct any questions to her using email rather than phone. Please remember Francesca in your prayers.

COME AND SEE
Every year we have people interested in knowing more about the Church who might like to become Catholics. On Monday 1st October there will be a ‘come and see’ supper for anybody interested in knowing more. People who have gone through the process will talk about their experience over a light supper. WHO COULD YOU ASK? Invitations are available in the narthex. Take one today and ASK!
Two meetings and training sessions will take place on Saturday 15 September and Saturday 22 September 2018 at 4pm for any person who would like to serve Mass. You must have received First Holy Communion to be able to serve at Mass. The meeting is expected to last approximately 75 minutes. So if you are thinking about becoming involved in this ministry, please do come along. Parents are welcome to stay.
BAPTISM PREPARATION COURSE
The next baptism preparation meetings will take place in the Parish Centre on Mondays 8th and 15th October from 7.30 - 9.00pm. CATECHISTS FOR FRHC
Reminder of the training session on Tuesday 18 September at 8pm in the Parish Hall
‘I BELONG’ LEADERS’ BOOKS
If you have a leaders’ book for First Holy Communion at home and you are no longer using it, then please kindly return it to the Parish Office at your earliest convenience, so we can pass them on to the new catechists, many thanks.
POST CONFIRMATION YOUTH GROUP (PCYG)– 13 SEPTEMBER
The first PCYG will be on Thursday 13 September from 7pm to 9pm in the Parish Hall. At this session we will be discussing arrangements for the sponsored sleepover on the 5 October and sponsorship details for the event, please make sure you come along with your completed OV7A form (if you haven’t already returned it). The PCYG is open to all the youth of our parish who have been confirmed, all are welcome.
CHRISTMAS SHOPPING TO SUPPORT CHRISTIANS IN PALESTINE
There will be a sale of beautiful olive wood goods after all Masses on the weekend of 15 & 16 September. A great chance to buy good quality religious goods for Christmas presents. Violence and unrest has reduced the number of pilgrims to the Holy Land and so this is a very important source of income for Christians and their families. Profits go directly to the families.
MACMILLAN CANCER COFFEE MORNING
The Macmillan Cancer Coffee Morning will take place on Friday 28 September after 10am Mass. Any donations of cakes and raffle prizes are gratefully received. All are welcome.
DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: ST VINCENT DE PAUL’S FEAST DAY – THURSDAY 27 SEPTEMBER.
We will be celebrating our patronal saint’s feast day on Thursday 27 September with a 7.30pm Mass followed by refreshments in the Parish Hall, all are welcome.
MARY’S MEALS – RAGS TO RICHES APPEAL, 6/7 OCTOBER
Another opportunity to support this feeding programme linked to education in Africa. Start collecting all your unwanted clothes, bags and shoes to bring on this date. The things are either sold in charity shops or recycled for cash. The clothes themselves are not sent to Africa – this would depress their local economy. For more information see www.marysmeals.org.uk
