10th October 2021, 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time
On quite a few occasions in the Bible, when Jesus talks about the Kingdom of God, he uses children as an example; ‘Let the children come to me, for it is to such as these that the Kingdom belongs’ (Mt.19),’unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom’ (Mt.18, Mk.10), ‘Whoever welcomes a little child in my name, welcomes me’ (Mk.9) Children are open and trusting, open to possibilities. God wants us to be child-like, trusting in him. In turn, our churches should be places where children and other vulnerable people are safe.
In Matthew 19 children are brought to Jesus for him to pray for them, but the disciples rebuke them. Jesus replies by saying, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
How does Jesus want us to treat and welcome children in today’s culture? Are there ways in which we hinder children from coming to Jesus?
How does he want us to change in that we become more like children in order to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven?
The Kingdom of God is a paradox that can look strange to people outside church:
• The Kingdom is not for the strong, it’s for the weak.
• The Kingdom is not for the rich, it’s for the poor.
• The Kingdom is not for the powerful, it’s for the powerless.
• The Kingdom is not for the proud, it’s for the meek.
• The Kingdom is not for adults, it’s for children.
Jesus encourages us to protect children, involve children, listen to children, and cultivate a childlike faith. The parish has procedures to ensure the safety of children but safeguarding is something that we must all promote.

GOODBYE To all my parish family, as some of you may know I have been struggling with my health for the last 3 years and because of this I have decided to retire and will be moving away. I have enjoyed working for the diocese and the parish for the last 19 years as secretary. I will miss you all very much but will come back and visit as I still have family in the area. I have not thought of my role as a job but more of a vocation which I have found extremely rewarding. I will be keeping up to date with the parish news and wish you all the very best. I hope to see you in the future when I visit. Lots of love and prayers. Bernadette
(Bernadette will finish on 14th October but will be coming back for a handover.)
